The position
About the role
British Institute of Lasers supplies and supports laser and IPL equipment used by clinics across the US and overseas. The team brings more than twenty years of scientific experience, supported by qualified engineers and customer service colleagues who help clients throughout the life of their equipment.
We are looking for a Laser Engineer to work with us on a contract basis. You will travel to clinics around the UK to inspect, service and repair laser hair removal machines, IPL equipment and tattoo removal systems.
Some visits will involve planned servicing. Others will begin with a machine fault, an unfamiliar symptom or equipment that is no longer performing as expected. You will need to investigate carefully, explain your findings clearly and carry out a practical repair where possible.
The role suits an engineer who enjoys varied technical work and can represent the company professionally at client sites. Strong diagnostic thinking matters, but so does the way you communicate with clinic owners and their teams.
Your work
Main responsibilities
Diagnose equipment faults
Troubleshoot laser hair removal, IPL and tattoo removal machines to identify electrical, optical, cooling or performance issues.
Complete on-site repairs
Carry out practical repairs at client locations and confirm that each system is operating correctly before completing the visit.
Service laser systems
Perform scheduled servicing, inspections and performance checks to support reliable equipment operation.
Work across laser technologies
Apply sound technical knowledge when working with alexandrite, Nd:YAG, diode and related aesthetic laser systems.
Keep technical knowledge current
Stay informed about equipment developments, servicing techniques and sensible working practices within the sector.
Support clinic teams
Explain faults, repairs and any further recommendations in a calm and straightforward way during each client visit.
Technical scope
Equipment and technologies
Alexandrite systems
Experience diagnosing, servicing or repairing alexandrite laser equipment used for aesthetic treatments.
Nd:YAG systems
A practical understanding of Nd:YAG equipment, common performance issues and suitable maintenance procedures.
Diode systems
Confidence working with diode laser platforms, including their cooling, power and optical components.
IPL equipment
Familiarity with intense pulsed light systems and the practical differences between IPL and laser technologies.
Experience and approach
What we are looking for

Previous experience in laser engineering, medical equipment servicing or a closely related technical field.

A sound understanding of laser theory and the safe operation of aesthetic laser equipment.

Hands-on experience with alexandrite, Nd:YAG, diode or IPL systems.

Familiarity with established manufacturers such as Candela or Lumenis would be useful.

Strong fault-finding skills and a patient, methodical approach to technical problems.

The confidence to work independently at client locations and make sensible technical decisions.

The ability and willingness to travel regularly to clinic locations across the US.
Contract engineering work
Independent visits with support behind you
You will often be the person on site assessing the problem and deciding what needs to happen next. That requires sound technical judgment, accurate reporting and the confidence to remain composed when a machine has stopped working during a clinic's busy schedule.
The wider British Institute of Lasers team will provide relevant background information and support where needed. After each visit, clear service notes help everyone understand the work completed, any parts required and whether another appointment is necessary.
